Job description:

Unix systems Hardware Information: CPU, Memory, Serial Number End of life or reuse NIC card settings Operating system information OS version Patch level Verify service contracts on critical systems Re-allocate systems Load latest OS and bring up patch levels Configure file systems Configure Fiber Channel if necessary Re-locate physically if necessary Configure network interfaces and bring up on networks Upgrade existing production systemsUpdate OS Levels Update Patch Levels Work with system users to coordinate outages for upgrades Integrate Unix logins with existing authentication serviceRadius or Tacas or ? perform basic security audit of systems, especially Internet facing systems Create Backups Identify data to be backed up by working with system users Create scripts to perform and verify backups Create documentation for what is backed up, how, and how to restore Assist with application deployment Fault Management Mail system configuration - we need a reliable SMTP outbound server! Network Analysis Tools Databases Portal (Application Servers, Metadata, etc...) Develop procedure for adding process management to Net SNMP Standardize server configurations Standard set of additional add-ons Perl, Perl libraries Net::SNMP, DBD, DBI (Oracle and MySQL), Parse::Mail Packages - Oracle Instant Client, curl, mutt, etc...Up to date Java Run TimeStandard Unix profiles (/etc/profile) Updated root passwords Standard Mail handling configuration(/etc/mail/sendmail.cf) Net-SNMP set up correctly to report Host Resources Rename servers as necessary to match naming convention Verify production servers are being managed bySMARTS and EM7 Add all systems to Lights Out Management network Install Solaris management system (N1?) Analyze system performance and perform kernel tuning adjustments Network interfaces Databases Application processing Investigate Linux OS for applications SMARTS pollers on Red Hat for example Standardize on one or two versions of Linux Perform technology transfer/training to juniorengineers as necessaryJustification: Most of the above mentioned items only take place as necessary - E.g. - OS' and patches are updated just enough to install new software We are probably out of compliance with several security regulations for patches and user management Backups only take place at the discretion of the system users There will be a lot of additional systems installed.There are currently about 50 Sun Solaris or Linux servers in production for various applications like SMARTS, HPOV, NMPortal, APG, RapidInsight, DSS LDAP/Identity Management, Cisco SCE/SCM, Voyance, DNS, Email, IPPlan, Oracle Data Warehouse, MRTG, and others.
